I've always loved sewing and especially Halloween costumes. I also love making costumes for the Renaissance Festival. Then came the steampunk festivals. Now I'm super into Comic Cons. I've been working my keister off on all sorts of new cosplay costumes and accessories for my Etsy shop and just for fun. This is my newest set. My daughter's an Airship captain and my niece is an Airship pirate. They were so happy.
I really love how these turned out. And I did both outfits for under $20. I did have a lot of stuff in my stash. I am a big seamstress. The dress and pirate outfit are made out of one tablecloth I got for four bucks at Salvation Army. I bought the white suede for the gun belt. I had all the red left over from the Captain Hook Halloween costume. It was dollar a yard fabric from Wal-Mart anyway. The pirate bodice is an old tie from Salvation Army and a vintage napkin and the tablecloth. The hats are just made from felt. I've got a bunch of many hats in my Etsy shop The Fox and the Lilly. I really love how they turned out. I almost went crazy doing the embroidery. It just takes so long even with the machine. I did love the compasses and the hot air balloon embroidery on the dress. I didn't get a good photo of it but the little jacket in the pirate costume is embroidered with skulls and roses. That's really fitting since Rose is my niece's middle name. It took a few hours to antique all the guns and knives for the costumes. They could still use a little work. The pirate belt needs some adjusting but it's off to a good start.

Altered Canvases
This is a fun little project I did for Kamille's room. I saw somthing like this on TV and decided to make my own mini version. To make the project you need:
Doll Hangers ($3.00 for 4)
Mini Canvas - I actually use one of the $1.00 pre-printed canvases from the dollar section at Michaels/JoAnns or the Dollar Store
Ribbon
Tulle
Flower,
Scrapbook Paper
Paint
The first step is to paint the canvas in a color that coordinates with your theme. On the right, I painted the canvas black. On the left, I used a convas that was already painted purple (it had ugly flowers painted on it - from the dollar store). Once that is dry, I cut a piece of scrapbook paper to fit. Then I added some title enbellishments from the scrapbook section. To make the skirt, I gathered a piece of tulle on the sewing machine (But you could just gather with a needle and thread or gather it as you glue). I hot glued the tulle tutu skirt into the bottom edge of the canvas. Then, I glued down a piece of ribbon or other decorative trim over the top. Finally, I added the flower as an embellishment.
I tacked the straps onto the hanger with a dab of hot glue. Then, I glue them onto the front of the canvas. Finally, I covered that up with ribbon bows.
You can put a photo on the scrapbook paper. I haven't gotten that far yet, but I will probably put a pic of Kamille and a couple of her friends on these little photo frames. You could make a really huge version of this with a child's hanger.

Free Tutorial Fridays - No Sew Pumpkin Halloween Costume
As promised, I am going to give you the tutorial to make this great Halloween costume. A little background:
I made this entire costume for less than $5.00 (actually it was $1.00 plus some stuff I had in the craft room). This costume would be totally cute for an adult, especially as a maternity costume or just to wear to your child's class part of for passing out candy. You can get everything to make the pumpkin and hat at the dollar store. My dollar store always has t-shirts and I lucked out this time they were actually from the Disney Store. If you cannot get a shirt at the dollar store, check Michael's and Joann's. They almost always have craft shirts on sale 2 for $5. You could also make this long sleeve. I was thinking of layering it over a green sweatsuit. If you bought a man sized shirt you could even make this into a little pumpkin dress for an adult. You can make this entire shirt and hat no-sew with hot glue, fabric glue, or fusible web. One note, if you use craft fuse, felt will melt onto your iron. Use a sheet of white paper as a "pressing cloth".
