Steampunk cosplay Airship captain and pirate costume

I've always loved sewing and especially Halloween costumes. I also love making costumes for the Renaissance Festival. Then came the steampunk festivals. Now I'm super into Comic Cons. I've been working my keister off on all sorts of new cosplay costumes and accessories for my Etsy shop and just for fun. This is my newest set. My daughter's an Airship captain and my niece is an Airship pirate. They were so happy.

I really love how these turned out. And I did both outfits for under $20. I did have a lot of stuff in my stash. I am a big seamstress. The dress and pirate outfit are made out of one tablecloth I got for four bucks at Salvation Army. I bought the white suede for the gun belt. I had all the red left over from the Captain Hook Halloween costume. It was dollar a yard fabric from Wal-Mart anyway. The pirate bodice is an old tie from Salvation Army and a vintage napkin and the tablecloth. The hats are just made from felt. I've got a bunch of many hats in my Etsy shop The Fox and the Lilly. I really love how they turned out. I almost went crazy doing the embroidery. It just takes so long even with the machine. I did love the compasses and the hot air balloon embroidery on the dress. I didn't get a good photo of it but the little jacket in the pirate costume is embroidered with skulls and roses. That's really fitting since Rose is my niece's middle name. It took a few hours to antique all the guns and knives for the costumes. They could still use a little work. The pirate belt needs some adjusting but it's off to a good start.

Over 100 Sewing Patterns - One Price

I've decided to pioneer a new concept for my digital sewing patterns.  In addition to selling access to single patterns, I'm going to offer people access to all my patterns for one price.

With your purchase, you get access to my entire sewing pattern library. At $29.95 that makes each pattern about $0.25.

The patterns print from your home printer onto standard 81/2'x11' printer paper.

The patterns have tons of photos in the step-by-step photo tutorial to help you through the process. You can make these on a standard sewing machine. No serger required.

Can you make items to sell using my pattern? Yep. You can make patterns in small scale production. What does that mean? Regular old people can use this pattern to make a little extra money through their etsy shops or at craft fairs, etc. It's not a pattern for large scale production. I love it if you link back to my shop when you do.

Share Share Share - I love to see your work. #indipatterns for Instagram
Or post to my facebook page at www.facebook.com/indisewing.

When you purchase, you will instantly receive a link and password to the dropbox where you can download any or all of the patterns. I add new patterns as I design them. Dropbox is a secure, online, file sharing program. It allows you to access files online and download them to your home computer.  You are granted access to all patterns for one year from date of purchase.

Sunday Sew Along - Fleece Remnant to Baby Doll Sling

I've made quite a few baby doll slings in the past and I also have a really great pattern in my craftsy shop for a cotton baby doll sling.  Unfortunately, I used cheap flannel from Joann Fabrics to make them for my daughter and niece.  I didn't bother to pre-wash it.  The result is that the sling that once fit my dd is now a bit snug.  It still works for smaller dolls, but alas, bitty baby didn't stay in.  Lesson learned - pre-wash your fabrics or you might be sorry

So, I determined to make a new sling for my daughter and one for my niece in the shortest time possible with stuff I already had around the house.
Honest truth, I can bang one of these out in under ten minutes.  I started with a fleece remnant.  I always have several of these around just because.  If you haven't purchased a remnant from Joann Fabrics before, the way it works is that you get 50% the current price per yard.  Most remnants are about 1 yard.  Fleece remnants can be more.  This remnant was about 1 1/2 yards.  So, I got this remnant while fleece was on $2.99 sale.  Then I get the remnant discount of 50%.  That made the remnant $2.25 ($2.99x1.5/2).  I made two slings with the one remnant and had a little left over to make two winter baby doll hats and 1 baby doll scarf.  Not bad for $2.00.

-----------------------------------
Supplies:
-----------------------------------
Fabric Scissors
1 yard of fleece
Thread

Step 1.  I cut the fleece down to about 44"x 21".  This size fit my very tall 3rd grader.  For my smaller niece, I made it about 42"x 21".

Step 2
Fold it in half, lengthwise.  Right sides together.  It can be a little hard to tell on fleece, but there is usually a side that is a little faded.

Step 3
I measure 14" from the end and pin.  Repeat on both sides.  You can see the little pink pin in the fabric.  It's a little hard to see because this fleece it so busy.
Then you need to stitch with a 3/4" seam allowance up to the pin.

Here you can see that both side are stitched 14" from the end.
This leaves an opening, as you can see below.
 Step 4
This is probably the hardest part.  You need to put the ends together.  Basically, reach your hand through one end of the tube to the other end of the tube.  Pull that end back through, until the two tube ends meet - right sides together.
Step 5
Pin around the perimeter.

 Step 6
Remove the front bib of your sewing machine, as if you were sewing a hem.  This allows the fabric to easily slide around the machine.
 Step 7
Stitch around the tube, using a 3/4" seam allowance.

Step 8
Turn the piece right sides out.
 Step 9
Next, hem around the opening of the sling.  It's not a requirement.  You could leave the edge raw, but I like it hemmed.  This is why you sewed such a large seam allowance of 3/4".  It gives you plenty of fabric to turn for hemming the opening.
 Step 10
Finally, I like to stitch up the sides of the opening.  Basically, where you put the pins you will sew straight down.  This makes a pocket.  Now the opening for the baby isn't open all of the way around the loop, so baby stays put in its little sling pocket.

Final result - a cute little baby doll sling in under 15 minutes.

Free Toddler Legwarmer Pattern

It's been a while since I put a free pattern out there.  I was cleaning out some of my old patterns, looking for a few patterns to update, when I saw this old favorite.  Here's why I loved this pattern:  My daughter was very tall for her age.  He pants were always too short and the next size up would be too big in the waist and just slide off.  So, I made about 10 pairs of these little toddler leg warmers.  They covered the bottom of her pants and she thought they were fun.
You can head over to my craftsy shop to download the free toddler legwarmer pattern.

Boorella PDF Soft Doll Sewing Pattern 14"

After a couple of weeks off from pattern making to make apple butter and get all of the back to school stuff finished, I finally got a chance to put the finishing touches on my newest little soft doll pattern.  I really love the way this doll turned out.

Steampunk Cosplay Time Traveling Clockwork Fairy

I took a little break from pattern making to indulge my more creative side with a little Steampunk sewing for the renfest Steampunk invasion.
